BRITAIN PRODUCES LESS COAL
SIX-MONTHLY FIGURES MORE. EMPLOYMENT GIVEN (BiniSß OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) , RUGBY, July 25. Speaking in the House of Commons on the vote for the Mines Department. the Secretary for Mines said that during the first six months of the present year the output of coal was increased only in Durham and South Wales —the decrease over the whole of the coalfields had been about 3,500,000 tons. Exports of coal shipped as cargo dropped in six months by 1,000,000 tons, being 17,500,000 against 18,500,000 in the same period last year. There was a drop of about 1,000,000 tons in exports to France, but on the other hand there were increases in the exports to Italy, Germany, and Spain. Employment on an average was considerably higher in the six months, being up by 17,500 and on an average earnings a shift were 11s, which was 5Jd higher than the average for the whole of 1937.
