Mr and Mrs Gilbert Grigg (Hororata) will be the guests of Mrs Griggs mother, Mrs T. Teschemaker, Fendalton, for Grand National week. Mr and Mrs Arthur Grigg (Surrey Hills) will be the guests of Mrs Grigg’s mother, Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson. Fendalton, for Grand National week. Mr and Mrs Guy Tapley (Dunedin) will be the guests of Mr and Mrs Guy Cotterill, Merivale lane, for Grand National week. Miss Margaret Macdonald (Orari) will arrive in Christchurch next week to stay with Miss Sheila Macdonald, Fendalton. Later, she will stay with Miss Relda Duncan, Rossall street. Mrs W. Richards, Mrs W. Martyn, Mrs P. Armstrong (Ohoka), and Mrs W. Nimmo (Milton) are attending the Dominion conference of Women’s Institutes being held in Wellington this week. Miss Frances Ogilvie, who has been for 18 years on the mission field of China as a representative of Knox Presbyterian Church, and who has been spending furlough in New Zealand, left last night for the north after spending a few days with Mrs T. N. Gibbs, Hackthorne road. Mr and Mrs G. Barton (Gisborne) will be visitors to Christchurch for Grand National week and will be the guests of Mrs Barton's uncle, Mr H. S. Lawrence, Garden road. Mrs D. C. Kidd (“Single Hill.” Burke’s Pass) is spending a holiday with her mother in Christchurch. Mrs F. O. Weallans (Oamaru) has arrived in Christchurch to act as matron of honour for her sister, Miss Helen Telford, whose marriage will take place to-night. Mrs F. C. Wooler (Brown’s road) is visiting her daughter, Mrs Maurice Brickell, Dunedin. Mrs M. S. Ronson was hostess at a 500 party held at the Canterbury Women’s Club. A pleasant time was spent at the Malplaquet Rooms, when the Red Cross Society held a bridge and “500” party. Mrs B. Green (president) wore a floral crepe de chine frock. FIRE BRIGADE’S BALL

GATHERING AT KAIKOURA The Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade held its annual bail in the Drill Hall, Kaikoura. Mrs W. D. Sabiston’s dance band, assisted by Mr Norman Carson (Christchurch), supplied the music, and extras were played by Mr Carson. The brigade was indebted to the ladies’ committee for its assistance in arranging the entertainment. The grand march was led by Captain Harrison and Mrs J. A. Johnston.
