PROPOSALS FOR ROADING LOAN

LITTLE PROGRESS EXPECTED

The Christchurch City Council s proposals for raising a reading loan are not expected to advance very far this year, according to the chairman of the council’s works committee (Cr, E. Parlane). At present the only indication of the council’s proposals is that given by Labour candidates. for the council during the election campaign three months ago, when it was stated that a loan of about £150,000 would be sought to finance the work of completing the sealing of streets in the city. Since the new council assumed office the works committee has instructed the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Galbraith) to prepare proposals for the sealing of about 70 miles of streets in the city; but Cr. Parlane said yesterday that because of pressure of work in the City Engipeer’s department connected with the preparation of estimates for the current financial year the committee had not yet been able to ccmtinuo its consideration of reading indicated that when the consideration of the council s financial estimates had been completed the progress of the reading proposals would be accelerated, but he could not see much possibility, he said, of the committee getting very far this year with these proposals. ..
