LARGER MANUFACTURE DESIRED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NELSON, July 26. “The Government is strongly o£ the opinion that it is desirable that more New Zealand tobacco should be manufactured here, and that growers should receive such return as will compensate them for their work in improving the quality and quantity.” said the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister for Industries and Commerce, in a statement read to a gathering of tobacco growers at Motueka. , ~ . . “A plan will be formulated for next season providing a reasonable return to growers as of average efficiency, said Mr Sullivan. “The aim is to increase the production and consumption of New Zealand leaf to the point where we are using 100 per cent, of such leaf, and where we have a substantial enlargement in the export trade of the local leaf.” The Minister drew attention to the steady growth of the industry, which next season should reach an output of more than 2,000,0001b. The last season had been .outstanding in the quantity and quality of the leaf, he said.
