SPY HUNT MOVES TO CANADA
SUSPECT SAID TO HAVE BEEN IN MONTREAL ALLEGATION OF ORGANISING RECALLED (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 24, 8.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, June 23. The United States spy ring investigation has spread to Canada, with the announcement by the Minister for Defence (Mr lan Mackenzie) that one of the suspects indicted in Washington had been visiting Montreal. The announcement recalls Mr R. B. Bennett’s allegation in the House of Commons that a German named Gerhard, known as the “Canadian Fuhrer.” had been engaged in secretly organising Nazis throughout Canada.
A New York message says the “Daily News” has been informed by Mr Leon G. Turrou, the agent of the Federal Investigation Bureau, who resigned to write his experiences during the Nazi spy round-up, that in spite of the pleas of not guilty, the Government has signed confessions from four of the accused, and they will be faced with them during the trial.
