TROTTING NOTES

Related to Wrackler Stamboul, a three-year-old by Frank Worthy from Trix Pointer, is a half: brother to Wrackler, and Arethusa, but in the little racing he has done he has not shown himself to be in the same class as his relatives. He is now owned by Mr J. Butler, and is trained by A. Cranston, Stamboul is young and inexperienced, and may yet do good service for his owner. At Least Promising In Glenholme, M. C. McTigue has a promising young pacer who may take a part in the finish of the Lyndhurst Handicap at Ashburton to-day. He is owned by Mr J. Keating and is by Nelson Derby from a mare by Great Audubon. Novice Pacers

Marque, who will race in the Lyndhurst Handicap at Ashburton to-day, is an aged mare by Travis Axworthy from a mare by Logan Pointer, and is owned by Mr J. Grice. Super Jack in the same race is trained by M. B. Edwards and owned by Mr C, E. Bourke. He is three years old, and is by Jack Potts from a Great Audubon mare. Poker Face, who is owned and trained by B. Grice, is a three-year-old gelding by Jack Potts from Colene Pointer, a good race mare in her day, and the dam of Kingcraft. Enthusiastic Members Attendance at meetings always shows the enthusiasm of club members, and while the committee and stewards of the New Brighton Trotting Club met 12 times during the year, Messrs G. L. Berry (president), H. C. Harley, A. L. Moffatt, and W. Thomson attended all meetings. Messrs A. J. Harper, J. Johns, B. J. McKenna, G. Scott, and E. S. Smart were each once marked absent, and two other members attended nine meetings. On a committee of 12, this is a record that the club might well be proud of. It proves that the officials elected have realised the responsibilities placed on them. New Brighton Trotting Club After two years’ loyal service, Mr G. L. Berry has relinguished the office of president of the New Brighton Trotting Club, and this office will now be taken over by Mr J. Johns for several years a vice-president and for a long time a steward of the club. Mr Berry put a lot of work into the club, and to his enthusiasm may be attributed the big increase in stakes aiid many improvements made to the course. Mr B. J. McKenna will be elected vice-president, and Mr A J. Harper will again be treasurer. There will be no election of officers, for the number of positions to be filled do not exceed the number of nominations received. The accounts to be presented at the club’s annual meeting show an excess of expenditure over income of £l2O 16s 10d, but this can be accounted for in the big increase in stakes, and to the many improvements made to the course and appointments for the convenience of patrons. In stakes, the club gave £BOOO, an increase of £IBOO on the previous year, and Government taxes amounted to £4468 7s 9d. Members’ subscriptions and entrance fees amounted to only £B2 8s 6d, while expenses of race meetings were £lOl4 0s 6d, improvements cost £515 12s 2d, repairs and maintenance £713 10s 10d, salaries £357, wages £348 13s 4d, and Trotting Conference levies £304 10s. Nomination fees for the year were £593, and acceptances £llll 15s, while the totallsator’s share was £11,982 18s 3d, and gate takings totalled £1506 19s. The year has been a most successful one for the New Brighton Club, which appears to be well on the way for another very successful season. Draw For Positions The lack of information given in the official race book in the draw for barrier positions is a sore point with many racegoers, who prefer to study the chances before they arrive at a racecourse. At present the rule pro.mm

being drawn up in an order to be determined by lot l?y a stipendiary steward and a steward of the club or by two stewards of the club not more than 24 hours before the proper time for weighing out” This rule naturally debars the draw being published in the race-book, and the public being denied valuable information. The Win ton and Gore Trotting Clubs at the annual conference next month will endeavour to have the rule altered so that the draw might be published.
