LABOUR MEMBER ON ITALIAN POLICY

ATTEMPT TO DIVIDE FRANCE AND BRITAIN FEARED (BRITISH OITTCIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, June 22. Mr Arthur Henderson (Labour) asked the Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain) in the House of Commons what representations had been received from Italy that the coming into effect of the Rome agreement should be expedited. Mr Chamberlain replied: “During the exchange of views, which from time to time has taken place between the two Governments, Italy has made plain its desire, in which Britain fully participates, that the agreement should be brought into force at the earliest possible moment consistent with the fulfilment of the pre-requisite conditions.” Mr Henderson then asked: “As Italy has suspended negotiations with France, will Mr Chamberlain give an assurance that Italy will not be permitted to drive a wedge between this country and France?” To this question Mr Chamberlain replied: “I have no reason to suppose that Italy wishes to drive a wedge between us and the French.”
