LIBRARY SYSTEM AT RANGIORA

SEVERAL INQUIRIES MADE BUSINESS AT MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL “Numerous inquiries from all over New Zealand are still being received about our library system,” said the Town Clerk (Mr J. M. Fraser), at the monthly meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council last night. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided. Mr Fraser said that the director of Country Library Services (Mr G. T, Alley) would visit Rangiora shortly, when he would hand over the first large instalment of new books. Councillors were invited to be present on this occasion, when some brief ceremony would be held. Additional State Houses A letter was received from the Department of Housing Construction enclosing a scheme plan of the subdivision of land fronting Victoria street and Ivory street, for the erection of seven additional State houses, including one two-house unit, for the provisional approval of the council. The plan was approved. The works committee recommended that the council conisider the purchase of a truck for use in the borough. Mr C. S. Ayers said that the council should also consider the purchase of a tractor. The Town Clerk was instructed to obtain prices and specifications of trucks and tractors. Redaction in Cost of Gas Cr.. Ayers moved that the finance committee consider reducing the cost of gas to consumers. Cr. W. C. Prosser said that the operation of the gas department had been very satisfactory during the last year The motion was carried. , Cr. F. E. Martyn asked if anything could be done to heat the water in the swimming bath for the summer. He had heard several complaints from. competitors at carnivals, that the water was extremely cold. It was decided to ask the electrical engineer (Mr H. H. Matthews) to report on suitable methods of heating the water and to submit prices for the installation. MAGISTRATE’S COURT AT RANGIORA FAILURE TO REGISTER MOTOR-CYCLE Sinclair Skilton was charged at the Magistrate’s Court at Rangiora yesterday, before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., with operating a motor-cycle without a warrant ■ of fitness, that the cycle was not registered, and that he was not the holder of a driver’s licence at the time. Sergeant O. P. McEntee said that the cycle had not been registered since 1933. The defendant had no previous convictions. Defendant said he had since taken the cycle to a garage to obtain a warrant of fitness, but he had not yet procured a driver’s licence. He had no intention of operating the machine again until he had the necessary licence and certificates. The Magistrate said it was not usual for the Court to take a lenient view cf these offences, but as the defendant had a good record, he would adjourn the case until July 6. Separation Order An order for separation and guardianship and maintenance at 27s a week was granted to Mary Elenore Blackie, wile of Robert Douglas Blackie.
