SHORTHORN BREEDERS

MEETING OF N.Z. ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP OF NEARLY .1 400 Fifty-six ordinary and three junior members, making a total membership of ,380, were elected at the annual of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association last evening. The president (Mr F. G. Jones) presided. '

Reviewing a successful year, the annual report of the council said that from the breed’s point of view the Roypl Show held at Palmerston North was probably the most important event of the year, and the exhibit generally was a very fine one indeed, and credit was due to everyone who showed their stock. Congratulations were offered to the winners in all classes and also to those who did not win, for their interest and energy displayed in exhibiting their stock and contributing towards making the entry one wormy of the breed and of a Royal Show • ' Some excellent records were now standing to the credit of the breed, not only in New Zealand but also in Aus.tralia and England. It was encouraging to find the number of cows under test increasing, and, furthermore, reports from several districts recorded the fact that Shorthorn herds were claiming the honours of gaining on yields the top positions in their respective groups. To the greatest number of members butter-fat and milk yields were likely to be the chief consideration, and this was rightly so. as the Milking Shorthorn was primarily a utility animal, but one had only to travel the country to see what an influence Shorthorn bulls of good type, character, constitution, and cplour copld do in the production of good lines of store cattle to realise what a great asset the breed possessed in its ability tn cross to advantage. Sales of stock had maintained a satisfactory level, and where animals of good type and butter-fat backing were' offered for sale, the demand was exceptionally keen. The outlook for the dairyfarmer generally appeared to be sound as his produce was going into consumption steadily. Appreciation was expressed of the faithful services rendered to the association by Mr A. W. Green, organising secretary. The maintenance of the registrations and membership was largely due to his efforts and his practical and lucid demonstrations of the various points required in Milking Shorthorns were of great value at shows throughout New Zealand. The financial, statement said that the association was in a healthy position, the year having been the best for more than a decade. The year began with a credit of £157 3s lid, and closed with a credit of £123 2s. Assets exceeded liabilities by £1312 13s Id. Officers were elected as follows: — President. Mr W. J.
