ADDINGTON MARKET

HEAVY BEEF AND MUTTON ENTRY A GENERAL EASING Yesterday’s Addington market was conducted under most depressing conditions. Rain fell lightly but almost continuously during the day, and the gathering of farmers around the pens was reduced 4o a minimum. Fat sheep again comprised a heavy penning, as also did fat cattle, but the store sheep and fat lamb sections attracted only skeleton entries. The few store sheep forward were not of a type on which to base comparisons, but a few pens of wethers sold well. Fat ewes were easier by a good Is a head, and heavy wethers by a shade easier. The better classes of fat cattle were down by about 15s a head. Fat lambs were briskly competed for by exporters, who., took most of the entry. Small pennings in the fat pig section resulted in a sharp advance for baconers and a smaller one for porkers. A larger entry of vealers met with an easier sale. STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry was the smallest of the season, as was the attendance of farmers. There were a few odd lines of ewes forward, and these sold at recent values. The one notable line comprised 184 wethens, which made 18s to 19s 3d. A small pen of two-tooth ewes of very average quality sold at 20s, and another of culls at 14s. A pen of ewe hoggets sold at 15s Id. These prices may give a rather gloomy view of ewe values, but at recent clearing sales in the province, where there is a guarantee as to the mating, there is a tendency towards a brighter tone. FAT LAMBS The quality of the fat lamb penning indicated that the end of the season is at hand. There were several good pens forward, but the bulk were light. For these exporters competed spiritedly at full schedule rates, whilst butchers were in the market to some extent for the better classes, which sold under brisk competition. The yarding comprised 650 head, compared with 1120 last week. Next Wednesday’s sale will be the final one of the season before the closing down ol the works for export. FAT SHEEP The entry was again a large one, differing very little from that of last week, which comprised 6500 head. Entries came from further afield than usual, there being several drafts from South Canterbury and North Otago. Most of the entry showed up drably in the depressed conditions prevailing, but the quality was a shade better than for some sales. The market opened weaker than was the case last week for all classes of ewes. Medium sorts were down by more than Is a head, and exporters competed much less actively for light sorts. These were also cheaper by up to Is, and butchers’ ewes by about the same. Light wethers were also easier, and heavy wethers, which held values until well on in the sale, eased towards the conclusion. There were passings towards the end of the sale, when prices further declined. An outstanding line of 62 wethers from E. W. Mason (Mason’s Flat) averaged 32s 6d.

Values were;— . . Extra prime heavy wethers, to 33s 7d Prime heavy wethers, 28s to 31s. Prime medium-weight wethers, 23s 6d to 275. Ordinary wethers. 21s to 235. Light wethers, to 20s. Quality was better than for some sales, good drafts of steers being forward from local fattening districts, the Peninsula, and North Canterbury graziers. The market opened 4t very little change on the rates of last week. Indifferent quality being about the same with heavy steers a shade weaker. Until well on in the sale there was little change, but over tire last race or more there was a sharp drop, equalling up to 25s a head for all the better sorts, and to 15s for lighter cattle. Sales over the later stages were very hard to make, a not unexpected result of the overflow entry. Amongst the outstanding cattle was a pen of six from Sir Charles Clifford (Stonyhurst), which made from £l3 17s 6d to £l7 12s 6d. and a lino of 16 from C. B. Thacker (Okain's Bay), which averaged £l4 17s 6d. A fair amount of good beef sold at round about 31s per 1001 b. Values were as under:— Extra prime heavy steers to £l7 12s 6d. Last week’s good prices doubtless Induced the larger entry. The result was an all-roui)d easing of from 5s to 15s a head, noticeably on the plainer sorts, but good calves were the only class to sell at prices comparable with those of last week. There was a complete clearance. Values were:— Best runners, to £6 18s 6d. Heavy runners, £3 13s 6d to £5 11s. Medium runners. £2 8s 6d to £3 11s. Prime vealers, £3 18s, 6d to £5 16s. Medium calves, 32s to 58s. Small calves, 8s to 285., STORE CATTLE There was little of merit in the store cattle pens, and for the main part of the entry, comprising cows, there was a shade of easing. Two fair-sized pens of cows, one Shorthorn cross and the other Hereford, were passed. Other decent odd lots of cows sold at from £4 4s to £5 13s 6d. A pen of grown steers sold at £6 18s. DAIRY CATTLE There was a medium-sized entry in the dairy section of about 70 head, most of them of mediocre quality. Top price was £l4 for a good type of Shorthorn heifer. There was a fairly large showing of spring calvers in the entry, which sold at round about store value, and were bought for the most part by speculators. On an average best sorts were up in price by about 20s a head, but other classes were unchanged. FAT PIGS The porker entry was exceptionally small in the earlier stages, and prices reached the best level so far this season. Late entries, however, increased as the sale progressed. Notwithstanding, values kept up well until the last two races were

offered, when prices slipped to export values. Choppers were in medium supply, and showed very little change in value on the rates' of last week. Baconers were forward in small numbers, but the sale was the best experienced for a considerable time, values being better by from 4s to 5s a head. Values were:— Choppers. 48s Gd to £5 16s. Light porkers. 33s Gd to 42s Gd. Medium porkers. 43s Gd to 49s Gd. Heavy porkers. 51s Gd to 59s Gd. Average price per lb, Gid to 7id. Light baconers, £3 4s Gd to £3 13s Gd. STORE PIGS Tlie entry in the store pig section was again a small one, but in spite of the inclement weather prices all round showed a slight advance on the rates ruling last week. There were practically no wcaners In the market. Values were;— Weaners, iOs to 14s. Slips, 15s to 17s Gd. Small stores, 18s to 225. Medium stores. 23s to 265. Large stores, 27s to 30s. BURNSIDE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEO RAM.) DUNEDIN, June 22. The entry of fat cattle for the Burnside stock sale to-day totalled 387 head, compared with 354 head a week ago. The quality of the yarding was below that of the previous sale, only a few trucks of prime heavy cattle being forward. Values were slightly easier, from the commencement, but firmer as the sale progressed, only light and unfinished sorts being difficult to sell. Prime heavy bullocks made to £lB 2s Gd. prime £l2 7s Gd to £l4 12s Gd, medium and light £8 2s Gd to £ll 12s Gd. prime cows and heifers £9 2s Gd to £l3 2s Gd, medium heifers £6 17s Gd to £8 2s Gd. and light heifers £4 to £5 12s Gd. Extra prime beef brought 42s per 1001 b, prime 38s. prime cows and heifers 40s, and poorer quality 325. There was a limited demand for stores owing to continued rough weather. Some good two and a half to three-year steers brought to £9. A few more than 2000 fat sheep were offered, a smaller yarding than last week. Quality showed an improvement, but the demand was not keen and prices from the start were down slightly on late rates, the easing continuing throughout until towards the end sales were not easily made. Extra prime heavy wethers brought to £1 17s Gd, prime £1 12s 3d to £1 15s. medium £1 7s to £1 11s 3d. light £1 Is to £1 5s Gd. extra prime ewes to £1 9s, prime £1 Is 3d to £1 5s 9d, medium 17s to 19s Gd, light 12s to 15s Gd, prime lambs 18s Gd to £1 Is 9d. and medium and light lambs 11s Gd to 16s 9d. Several sections again eased at Stortford Lodge in’ a large yarding. • Eight thousand five hundred store sheep, 2000 fat sheep, 240 fat cattle, and more than 400 store cattle were entered, making it the largest sale so far this winter. Store sheep sold irregularly, but later stabilised and a good clearance was made at last week’s rates. Wethers in particular firmed. The best in this made 25s 3d, forward 22s Id to 23s Gd, medium 19s Gd to 21s Gd. small from 19s. Many more fat sheep were forward than the market could absorb, and after local requirements had been met the prices slumped heavily during the latter part of the sale. One operator bought fully 75 per cent, of the sheep. Fat cattle continued their downward trend and eased another 10s. * The better-class store cattle entry met with a slightly better demand.
