ADMINISTRATION OF RELIEF

* MAYOR’S PROPOSAL TO TAKE CONTROL DISSOLUTION OF ASSOCIATION RECOMMENDED Following representations by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane), the executive of the Metropolitan Relief Association has decided to recommend the association to disband. The association depends on the Mayor for its finances, and Mr Macfarlane proposes to assume complete control of relief administration in the city, using the present system and staff. The motion recommending the dissolution of the association was proposed by Mr E. H. Andrews, and seconded by Mr H. Lightband, and was carried unanimously as follows:—“In view of the representations of the Mayor, the executive recommends that a motion that the association disband be submitted to a general meeting of the association.” Discussing this decision, Mr Macfarlane said yesterday that the general meeting of the association would be held on June 16. For. some time, he remarked, members of the executive had considered whether they should discontinue their activities, as there was not the scope at present for the administration of relief. “I supported that view, in the light of my experience since becoming Mayor,” said Mr Macfarlane, “and thanked members very much for the work they have done over a long period. I assured them, too, that if an emergency should arise through economic troubles, a similar committee would be created. For the future administration of relief I propose to have a band of social workers associated with me, and all the machinery of the present depot will be kept in operation. The auditor, Mr A. Stewart, and the supervisor of the depot, Mr D. Harvey, and his staff will be retained.”
