A JUDGE FOR 25 YEARS

MR BANKS’ SERVICES TO MALVERN SHOW PRESENTATION MADE BY ASSOCIATION A unique record of service to the Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association was recognised by the association at “Bangor,” Hawkins, recently, when a presentation was made to Mr W. A. Banks (Rangiora), who has acted as a judge to the association for 25 years. He has judged sections as varied as garden vegetables and poultry, and has also been a regular •judge of roots and potatoes, sections in which there is always keen competition at the Malvern Show.' To mark Mr Banks’s service, Mr L. P. Morrison (president of the association) presented him with a sports walking-stick, suitably inscribed. Eugolistic reference was made to Mr Banks’s capabilities as a judge by the president and Mr W, J. Jenkins, a past president, and a prominent show exhibitor. After the presentation, Mr Banks gave his impressions of the standard of sections at the Malvern Show, which he thought compared more than favourably with other and larger shows. He thanked the association for the gift. WEATHER DURING MAY WAIAU Returns supplied by the postmaster at Waiau show that in May 44 points of rain fell on a total of three days, the heaviest fall being on May 28, when 21 points were recorded. Several heavy frosts were recorded in the month, and thick morning fogs were common. KAIKOURA The rainfall for the month of May at Kaikoura was 2.24 inches, which fell on eight days, the maximum fall being 1.7 inches on May 4. The total for the five months of this year is. 15.06 inches, compared with 10.51 inches last year. DUNSANDEL The rainfall at Dunsandel for the month of May, as shown by Mr C. A. Wright’s gauge, was 59 points, as compared with 2.97 inches for the month of May last year. Rain fell on ihree days only, as follows: May .5, 35 points; May 6, 12 points; May 8, 12 points. The total fall for the five months of the year ending with May 31 was 13.9 G inches. The fall for the same period last year was 12.98 inches. LITTLE RIVER The rainfall as recorded by Mr D. Richards, Little River, for May was two inches. Rain fell on six days, with a maximum on May 4 of 87 points. The total for the year to date is 11.62 inches. HORORATA The weather observations taken for the month of May by Mr Jewell, “Terrace Station,” at Hororata, show that rain fell on 10 days, the maximum fall being on May 4, of 18 points. The rainfall for May was 72 points, as compared with 2.65 inches for May, 1937. The rainfall for this year to end of May was 18.18 inches, as compared with 16.15 inches for the same period last year. Twenty-one frosts were registered, the most severe being 14 degrees on May 21. PLUNKET SOCIETY DUVAUCHELLE SUB-BRANCH MEETING The thirteenth annual meeting 'of the Duvauchelle sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held in. the county chambers on Tuesday. Mrs P. Cunningham, president, presided over a good attendance. The president stated that the bal-ance-sheet disclosed a very satisfactory financial position. LINCOLN-TAI TAPU SUB-BRANCH A committee meeting of the LincolnTai Tapu sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held recently, the newlyelected president, Mrs W. A. Johnston, presiding. It was decided to hold a bring-and-buy afternoon early in August, when Nurse Horne will be present. WOMEN’S MISSIONARY UNION AT DUNSANDEL T* • annual meeting of the Dunsandel Prt, >yterian Women’s Missionary Union was held on Thursday. The Rev. R. R. Adair presided over a large attendance. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs J. Mackie; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Macpherson and H. A. Brown; secretary, Mrs James Walker; treasurer. Mrs N. Walker; Maori mission birthday secretary, Miss Aldridge: harvest field secretary, Mrs C. M. Smith; stamp secretary, Mrs Manson. , . Members took the opportunity to say farewell to Mr and Mrs Adair. Mrs H. A. Brown, in presenting Mrs Adair with a small gift, spoke of the splendid work done by Mrs Adair during her term as president, and expressed regret at her departure. Mesdames Mackie, Johnston, Sheat, and James Walker also spoke. Mrs Adair expressed the pleasure she had always had in coming over to Dunsandel. CARDS TOURNAMENT AT CHEVIOT The 500 tournament run by the Cheviot Croquet Club to raise funds to improve the grounds was concluded recently. The aggregate was won by F. Lowe with a total of 147£ points, the runner-up being Mrs W. J. McClintock with 143 points.

Sealey, Lavaud street, Akaroa, have returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mrs A. S. Forrester, Mount Pleasant, is visiting her sister, Mrs W. E. Swainson, Lavaud street, Akaroa. Mr and Mrs E. H. SWIMMING BATHS FOR OHOKA WORK TO BEGIN IMMEDIATELY At a public meeting hejd in the Ohoka Hall on Wednesday evening Mr S. Scott explained the recent offer made by the Education Board and Public Works Department for the erection of swimming baths. It was unanimously agreed to proceed with the work immediately. Mr S. Scott was elected chairman, Mr D. Dailey secretary, and Mr I. Treleaven treasxxrev. A delegation of Messrs C. Morgan Williams, M.P., W. G. Mayer, S. Scott, and G. Lintott were appointed to approach the Eyre County Council and Domain Board for a grant towards the funds. It was decided to canvas the district for subscriptions. LODGE MEETING AT CUST The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Cust Lodge. 1.0.0. F., M.U.. was presided over by the N.G., Bro. Leslie Grant. Two members were declared off the funds of the lodge and two were declared on the funds. Quarterly accounts and sick pay amounting to £29 10s 2d were passed. The following officers were installed by P.G. Bro. R. F. Brunsden, acting lec-ture-master; N.G., Bro. Ernest Gartery, V.G., Bro. T. Reid; elective secretary, Sister E. Feather. Officers appointed were:—Warden, Bro. K. Rowe; R. S. to N.G., P.G. Bro. I. Howat; L.S. to N.G., Sister G. Feather; R.S. to V.G., P.G. Bro. Henderson: L.S. to V.G., Bro. W. Pachnatz; guardian, Bro. CHEVOIT COUNTY COUNCIL At the adjourned annual meeting of the Cheviot County Council held recently Mr W. L. Foster was elected chairman. Councillors present were: Messrs b. McLaren, J. D. E. Winskill, G. F. McFarlane, W. R. Wilkinson, J. Paton, and M; C. Hyde. Mr G. Paton was appointed the council’s representative on the No, 13 District Highways Council.

SOCIAL AT MEDBUKY A card evening and dance . organised by the Madbury Social . Committee was held recently. Winners of the dards were Mrs L. Plaisted,- Miss Violet Scott, Mr A. Topp. and Mr E. G. Dalzell. Music for the dancing was played by Mrs J.- Fletcher, and extras by Mrs L. Plaisted and Mrs E. G. Dalzell. Mr J. Fletcher was master of ceremonies.
