SMITH —CP CONNELL The marriage of Josephine, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. A. O’Connell (Lichfield street), and Cecil, youngest son of Mr and Mrs H. Smith (Burke street), took place at the Catholic Cathedral, Barbadoes street, the Rev. Father P. Timoney officiating. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of cream satin trimmed with buttons down the front, and embroidered sequins on the collar and train Her long tulle veil fell from a coronet of silver; and her bridal bouquet was of chrysanthemums and freesias. , , ~ ... Mrs L. Higgins attended the bride as matron of honour. She wore a frock of pale green taffeta with hem and facings on the lapels of the jacket Of mauve taffeta. Her hat was of S r T e^ n taffeta, and she carried a posy of violets &nd irises. Mr H, O’Connell was best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Selwyn street halL Mr and Mrs C. Smith will live in Christchurch. ENGAGEMENT NOTICES The engagement is announced of Monica Helen, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Descriptions of weddings may ,be inserted at the rate of five shillings (ss) per column inch, with a minimum charge of One Pound (£1). and photographs of wedding groups at the rate of five shillings (ss) per single column inch, with a minimum charge of Two Pounds Two Shillings (£2 2s). —6 SOCIAL AT CARLETON Members of the Carleton Tennis and Cricket Clubs organised an enjoyable evening social, which was held recently in the Carleton Hall. During the evening the president of the tennis club (Mr A. Inch) made a presentation of a workbasket to Miss Mavis McNivan, who has left the district. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs G. Mehrtehs, with an extra by Mr A. Worn all. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Molly Bennett and Mr H. Horgan, and winners of card competitions were Miss M. Paget and Mr S. Glew. Mr A. Inch was master of ceremontes.

FANCY DRESS PARTY The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) opened a successful fancy dress party and baby show held in the grounds of the St. Albans School on Saturday afternoon. Shirley Inwood presented a bouquet to the Mayoress, who consented to judge the costumes, with the
assistance of the Mayor and Mrs H. McCaw. After the Mayoress had presented the prizes the official partyv which included Mr H. McCaw and Mr Sheppard, chairman of the school, were entertained at afternoon tea. The results of the baby show, judged by Nurse Duncan, were as follows:—* Boys: Ronald Park 1, Russel Harris 2. Girls; Val Cook 1. Dorreen Price 2. , Prizes were awarded for the best and most original fancy dresses.
