DAIL DISSOLVED

IRISH ELECTION NEXT

MONTH

« PRECARIOUS MAJORITY ” OF GOVERNMENT

(Received May 29, 8.35 p.m.)

LONDON, May 28

A proclamation has dissolved the Bail Eireann and has ordered a General Election for June 17.

This apparently is a sequel to Mr de Valera’s displeasure at a onevote defeat on May 25, through the absence of 10 Government supporters. He is anxious to throw off the shackles of the Labour Party, on which he has had to depend sines the election last July.

It is expected that the London agreement will be his main plank. The proclamation dissolving the Bail Eireann stated: “The Government with a precarious majority, consistently at the mercy of a group of combinations supporting sectional interests, could not do the nation’s work as it should be done.'’ The decision to hold an election has startled Ireland, which expected that the Government would await the result of the Monaghan by-elec-tion on June 7 before fixing the date for the General Election. The Monaghan by-election would have been a straight-out fight between the Fianna Fail and the Fine Gael. The nomination day was to-day, but the by-election is now cancelled, and Br. Hyde’s installation as President, planned for June 1, is postponed to an unfixed date not later than June 22. Eight Ministers have cancelled arrangements to address meetings to-morrow.
