MARUIA SPRINGS

APPROACH TO GOVERNMENT DISCUSSED Representations which have already been made to the Government to take over the lease of the Maruia Springs were discussed at a meeting of the Buller Progress League on Friday, evening. The chairman (Mr J. C. Brown) outlined the procedure taken, including the soliciting of the co-operation of Murchison and Reefton local bodies. He said the springs could be developed to provide a great service to the people, and considered it ridiculous to see West Coast people going to Hanmer when Maruia was much closer. Mr D. Moloney stated that the league should not worry ' about the lease on adjoining land, but concentrate on persuading the Government to take over the springs. He considered that the Misses Morris were providing a good service with their hostel. His contention as to the lease was supported by Mr C. Friend. The procedure stated by the chairman was adopted. Mr Friend said that with so many men working in the vicinity it was necessary to have a telephone extension to the Maruia hostel.-It was stated that the league had this matter in hand. Reefton-Maruia Road Open Cars are now able to negotiate the Reefton-Maruia road, on which slips caused great damage on April 7. About 80 workers are engaged on repair work under the Public Works Department, repairing the road, which is extremely rough for almost six miles. The condition of the highway will remain rough for some time, although improvements are constantly being made.
