COUNCIL MAKES -TOUR OF INSPECTION The Mayor of Sumner, Mr J. E.Tait, with Crs. F. D. Eldridge, C. E. Claydon, E. T. Chitty, I. J.: Wilson, W. J. Duff, P. C. Fenwick, E. A. M. Roberts, J. L. Gant, the Town Clerk, Mr J. F. Menzxes, the engineers, Messrs G. Harper and A. A. Cheshire, and the traffic officer, Mr C. Bowman, made a comprehensive tour of inspection of the borough on Saturday. At Taylors Mistake the party mcit Mr Darby, who pointed out the need for easier access from the road to sections facxng the smaller beach, and also-the need for electric lighting. . . , At the top of Scarborough a sharp corner, some dangerous rocks, and storm water troubles were looked into, while lower down turning places and suitable parking for motor-cars, together with road surfacing, were matters fully discussed with a group of residents. The party inspected the new sewer mains and the central pumping sewer station at St. Leonards Park, which will deal with the sewage from the valley area. A new type of rock-edged footpath was inspected, and a visit made to the gas works. • After lunch the party gave some time to the new Plunket rooms at the pier, the garden plots nearby, and to a number of garage sites on Clifton. On the Clifton extension road the party was met by Mr Jack and the roading problems dealt with. The party then inspected the reserve on the old swimming pool and the accumulations of rock dumped on the beach hear the Monck’s Bay tram stop. Here the proposals for improving the waterfront and the Christchurch Yacht Club’s pavilion were outlined. Later a group of Redcliffs residents met the party,’ and the claims for bathing facilities for the children were fully dealt with. Of the two sites, at Simpson’s corner and Estuary road, the former was most favoured, and the residents were assured that the council would go carefully into the cost of a scheme for making an enclosure there. The need for groynes on the waterfront near the pumping station were dealt with and, after going over the playing area there the party inspected the footpath formation near the boundary with the Heathcote County and finished at the . main pumping station at the Cutting.
