Ratepayer improves Beginning, smartljr and pacing more moothjy; than he had done in many of ils previous races. Ratepayer won the Inroductory Handicap from end, to end. Xeon Oro, Northern Smile, Kia Kaha, and Sports Queen broke up at the start. Ratepayer taking the lead immediately. He •led past the stands from Militia, Stargum, Bronze King, Worthy Quest, and Bonny Pointer. was still in front eh-. * terlng the - straight from Militia, Bronze . ’King, and- Scottish Bard, who were'.abreast, ahead of Stargum and Bonny Pointer. Ratepayer stayed on to win by a ■ length from Stargum, who finished solidly to beat Militia by half a length. Scottish Bard, who weakened slightly after making a smart run on .the outside at the . top turn, was a head away fourth, followed by the fast-finishing John’s Last, Bonny Pointer, and Tommy McElwyn. Militia showed improvement, and paid double figures for a place. Unhoppled Trotteits Except for a couple of very short breaks, the second fancy, Frontier Boy. gave a good display to score an all-the-way victory In the Leamington Handicap. Wlrl Bingen and Moira Bingen attended Frontier Boy closely In the running, and they werS clear of Lee Leeta, Native Prln- ■ cess, and Braemar at the end of the first round. Wlrl Bingen appeared likely, to trouble Frontier Boy until he made a bad break at the home turn, where Moira Bingen, Braemar. and Native Princess were handy. Frontier Boy was clear at the distance, and went on to win by'two lengths from Lee Leeta, who battled on ’solidly after making a short break a little more than three furlongs from home, Braemar recovered In time to get third after breaking when going fast in the straight, and Wiri Bingen was fourth. The ’ each-way favourite, Moira Bingen, made a couple of costly mistakes,, and most of the others failed to go at all well. . The Favourite Fails f The each-way favourite, Cavan Chief, cut up badly in the Cambridge Winter Trotting Handicap, and was the first horse beaten. He was slow to strike his hopples and lost a good deal of ground before he settled down to make a smart sprint to , the leader, Transwell, in the first few furlongs. He dropped back before going a hillc, and was never afterwards prominent. Xranswoll attempted to lead all the way, arid he failed only In the last few < strides, the little-fancied Sir Frank getting up to defeat him by a neck and pay double figures. Transwell and Our Summer were clear of the field with half .a mile to go, and it was not until he made a fast run on the outside nearing theturn that Sir Frank came prominently into the picture. He came home well, but Trans well might have won if he, had . not skipped near the post. Lucky Love went a good race for third, and Our Summer was a fair fourth, ahead of Great Chum, Baron Grand, and Tryment. Back-markers Succeed The back-markers, Roma Girl and Equipoise, finished first and second in the Hautapa Handicap, for which both were Solidly supported. Roma Glrl dld not be- . come prominent until she came with a fast run on the outside to score by a neck from Equipoise, who moved up smartly half a mile from home and was m front about 50 yards from the post. Wmhisway was half a length away third, battling on gamely after taking the lead lr«n Wall Street at the turn. Langdale .went well, considering that he was hav2ealmld rst face Eince coming-to Now ' Vanora Wins , .The second fancy, Vanora, recorded a 1?““. performance to win the Claudelands f?f nd lcap. in which the each-way favourrf>. Red Shadow attempted to give starts up to .84 yards in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday, but itvis doubtful if he could have won fropi the limit, for the winner, Frisco Boy, registered 2min 40sec for the mile and a quarter. To have won Red Shadow would have had to register better than 2min 33sec, time not yet approached by any horse racing in New Zealand. Red Shadow, however, is 11 years old, and cannot be expected to .improve on his best performances. a spin

The galloping horseman, J. Murfitt, rede Red Ranger at Addington on Saturday. He showed some ability on a hoppled pacer, but his mount fell 100 yards from the post when making a determined challenge. Murfitt was not hurt. Fast Times

Sonoma King rind Listowel set out at a very fast pace in the opening event at Canterbury Park on Saturday, and early it was apparent that they would have the race to themselves if they could stand the strain. Both trotters gave fine displays, and the winner registered 3min 10 3-ssec from a Smin 36sep mark. Later in the day Lady Sonoma, handicapped on 3min 30sec, won in 3min 22sec. The fastest mile and a half of • the day was made by Donor, who, from a Smin 31sec mark, did Smin. 16 2-Ssec. Promising Centaurus, who was driven by R. B. Berry in the Juvenile Stakes, is a wellgrown gelding by David McElwyn from Alifce Dillon, a half-sister to Kohara and dam of Glenrossie.
