NEW RAILWAY STATION

SINKING OF TEST BORES FOR FOUNDATIONS ft BIG BUILDING SCHEME AHEAD Although the Minister for Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) has yet to announce the details of the new railway station and yards for Christchurch, the preparatory work connected with both schemes is well advanced. To ascertain the foundations for the new station 12 test bores have been sunk on the land fronting Moorhouse avenue from the present buildings and extending towards the Madras street overbridge. The new station will occupy more than this area; but no details are yet ascertainable. The station proper will probably run from near Colombo street to Barbadoes street, and the main platforms will extend from the present main line across to the island station, used only by district trains. In the big building scheme provision, it is likely, will be made for the accommodation of the district staff at present located in the threestorey brick building between -Madras and Barbadoes streets. New access for pedestrians over the lines and yards’ from Madras street south to Moorhouse avenue will probably be given after the old wooden footbridge has been demolished to permit of the carrying out of the building alterations. Work at the Waltham yards is still in the preparatory stages. Trees and houses have been removed and fencing erected between Palsgrave street and Wilson’s road. The erection of the big goods shed and the repair depot has not been started yet. -
