PRESENTATIONS TO MUSEUM

+ OLD TELESCOPE AND DAGUERROTYPES The Canterbury Museum has received a gift of an old-fashioned nautical telescope, presented by Mrs C. H. Moreland, of Christchurch. It is at least 100 years old. Fully extended, it is more than three feet in length, and an interesting feature is an inset panel on which are depicted the signal flags formerly used by the navy and the merchant service. It is a comparatively simple code, including 10 number flags, • telegraph, rendezvous, and first and second distinguishing pennants. The telescope bears the inscription, "Janet Taylor, 104 Minores," but no date is given. Three good examples of the early daguerrotype, the predecessor of the photograph, have been presented" by Mrs C. H. Bridge, of Christchurch. The

date is probably between 1840 and 1850. Two of the three are hand tinted. The daguerrotype was a kind of photograph taken on a sensitised plate, but the negative was developed in the actual picture, thus making a mirror image, and no prints could be taken.
