RUBBISH DUMP AT SPREYDON

TO THE EDITOR Olf THE PRESS. Sir,—My statement to "The Press" that the City Council's dump in Spreydon was uncovered over an area of 800 square feet upon the evening of February 24, of which I took half a dozen snapshots in the presence of a resident of Conway street and the council's foreman at 7.45 a.m. on February 25, requires a better denial than the statement from the Mayor, contained in your Issue of this morning. The area has been infested with flies all the summer, and I paid my first visit to see how the work was being carried out on February 23, when I read a press report that work would shortly be commenced upon the demolition of the destructor, because the City Engineer had reported that the method was satisfactory. I found a large surface of stinking vegetable and other offensive matter, which no attempt had been made to cover, also five large rats at the base of this face. This was about 9.30 p.m. The following evening I invited a resident to accompany me at about 7 p.m., and the same conditions were prevailing. I telephoned to the Mayor and asked him to come down, but he said that he was too busy. Will Mr Beanland deny that also? I took the photographs the following morning, and I should be glad if you would reproduce one of these. —Yours, etc., L. HOLLINGS. March 7, 1938.
