LITTLE RIVER EWE FAIR

BEST OF SERIES TWO-TOOTHS TO 41/The Little River ewe fair was held yesterday in the best of weather. This sale has not been favoured in this respect in the last two years, one fair having to be postponed on account of the valley being flooded. Yesterday the conditions were ideal and there was. a large attendance of Peninsula and Plains farmers. - The entry was much larger than usual, comprising 16,000 head, as against 11,000 at last fair. The greater proportion were two-tooths, with aged sheep exceeding the number of guaranteed lines of four-year-olds. The best prices of the season so far were established. Two-tooths sold at 41s for one pen and 40s 6d for two others. ' Quite a number of pens ranged from 37s 6d to 40s. Top price at the preceding fairs this season was 40s in one case at Hawarden and 38s in two at Amberley. Best four-year-old price yesterday was 31s, which was exceeded by the top price at Amberley of 33s 6d. The sheep offered are of a different wool type to those forward at the fairs in the northern part of the province, being Romney cross and threequarterbred. With the greater resistance of coarse wool sheep to footrot, and the fact that there is not a great deal of difference in the price of the two classes of wool there has been a trend towards the use of stronger woolled sheep this last year or two. The Peninsula has practically a monopoly as far as Canterbury is concerned in the production of coarse woolled breeding ewes, and the season being an excellent one for feed, the whole entry came forward in better condition than usual. A substantial proportion showed too strong a tendency in the wool to suit all buyers, but this had little effect on the comDetition. The Two-tooths The prices realised for the twotooths substantially exceeded expectations. With the difference in the classes of sheep at yesterday's and the earlier fairs a comparison of prices is of little value, but good two-tooths appeared to be 2s to 2s 6d a head better. The first few pens of two-tooths offered met with very restrained bidding, and several were passed. However, confidence quickly reasserted itself, and a rapid firming set in, prices up to 39s being quickly reached. Top price was 41s. for a pen of 89 Romney cross from E. Hay ( Pigeon Bay). This was closely followed by two pens at 40s 6d—one of 135 from Sir Bruce Stewart (Pigeon Bay) and another of 150 from Mrs I. Stewart (Barry's Bay). F. W. Williams (Robinson's Bay) secured 40s for his top pens of 147 and 116. This vendor topped the market last year at 475. A. E. Williams (Port Levy) secured frcm 36s to 37s for more than 500 of his big entry of 1500. The Older Sheep The older sheep did not sell with the same vigour as the two-tooths, but many pens were aged and were com- I peted for accordingly. Top price for a guaranteed four-year pen was 31s for' 62 from Allan Goodwin (Pigeon Bay), i this vendor's second draft of 182 sell-! ing at 30s. Other good-sized pens of four-year-olds made from 24s to 25s 9d. The best of the five-year sheep sold at up to 20s, and lines of four and five-year to 24s 6d. Failingmouthed pens ranged from 13s to 16s 6d. There were a number of passing of the older sheep. The following is a range of prices compared with those of last year's fair:— 1937. 1933. s. s. s. s.
