IMPROVED TRAMWAY REVENUE
EARNINGS FOR JANUARY Mainly because of the infantile paralysis epidemic last year, the net earnings of the Christchurch trams showed an increase of £2BOI in the four weeks ended on January 30, compared with the same period of 1937. In a statement presented to the meeting of the Tramway Board on Saturday morning, the following details were given, the comparison for the same period of last year being in parenthesis;— Earnings £17,649 (£3092 increase), operating expenses, £12,472 (£291 increase), net earnings £5177 (£2BOI increase), standing charges £5798 (£264 increase), deficiency £621 (£2537 improvement). There were 175,357 more passengers carried during last January than in the first month of 1937. Of the deficiency estimated by the board for the year ending on March 31, amounting to £19,000, the figure reached by the end of January was £18,012. Mr G. Manning considered that this position was satisfactory, but said he did not know whether the deficiency could be kept down to the remaining £9BB of the estimate during February and March. It was reported to the board that increased wages for workshop _ employees as a result of Conciliation Council proceedings during the month would involve the board in an increased cost of £1378 a year.
