RUBBISH DUMP AT SPREYDON
ment.”]
♦- MR L. ROLLINGS COMPLAINS OF OFFENSIVENESS Allegations that the new rubbish dump at Spreydon was not being satisfactorily looked after w ere made last evening by Mr L. Rollings, president of the Spreydon Progress League. He claimed that it caused an offensive smell, attracted rats, and that a large area of it was not covered in accordance with the assurances of the City Council. “We were assured that the dump was carefully covered,” said Mr Rollings. “I visited the dump on March 2; I found it by the smell all'right. I saw five rats running about among the rotting vegetables. There was an area of about 800 square feet uncovered., I have taken a photograph of the dump and have telephoned the Mayor and asked him to come and have a look at it. The Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, refused to believe the statements of Mr Rollings. “The rubbish dump is all right,” he said. “The horses did get into it and trample it about a bit, but that has been put right. I have the report of the City Engineer before me now, stating that everything is in order.”
