IMPROVEMENTS TO ROADS

LOAN PROPOSALS IN DEBATE DISCUSSION AT WESTPORT , The feeling that road improvements in the Duller district are very urgent was predominant at a meeting of ratepayers, mostly farmers, held in Westport on Saturday night to protest against the raising of a loan of £15,000 for street improvements and £35,000 for new council chambers. The Mayor, Mr J. Kilkenny, presided. One of the conveners of the meeting, Mr E. McPadden, said he thought that the roads were in a very bad state, but he considered that the ratepayers’ burden was already too heavy. The increased rate of the loan proposal, if carried, would bring the total to Bgd in the £. Mr J. Hateley, president of the Duller branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, said that members generally were in favour of the proposals, but it was stated by another speaker that Karamea farmers were not in favour of raising a loan. Mr D. J. Archer, chairman of the county council, said that out of the council’s revenue of £78,298 last year, farmers in the county contributed only £2200. In the Karamea district £9OO was collected in rates, half going to the hospital levy and the other £450 being left to the council for road maintenance. He considered that the Karamea people and ratepayers in general had nothing to growl about concerning the loan. A motion was passed thanking thp county council for giving the ratepayers an opportunity of considering the two proposals, PERSONAL NOTES GREYMOUTH A complimentary dinner will be tendered this evening by the president (Mr P.
