WESTPORT WINS EVERY EVENT FIRST ANNUAL COMBINED MEETING Teams from the Granity, Denniston, Reefton and Westport Schools held the first annual sports meeting on the Westport Technical High School grounds on Saturday. The Westport athletes, many of whom have been regular competitors at the weekly amateur sports meetings, completely outclassed' their opponents, and they won every event on the programme. Good performances were registered by B. Palmer, K. Scott, and J. McDonald, and Misses B. Roberts and Jean Watson, who were the outstanding performers at the meeting. WESTLAND LICENSING COMMITTEE Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., presided at the quarterly meeting of the Westland Licensing Committee. Renewals were granted to the following applicants: —Albert Clarke, Courthouse Hotel, Kumara; Spencer F. Browne, Dominion Hotel, Hokitika. The following transfers were granted:—Otira Hotel (John Cochran); also motion of waiver; Recreation Hotel, Greymouth (John Ryan); Golden Eagle Hotel, Greymouth (D. Steel); Dominion Hotel, Hokitika (Spencer F. Browne to Albert Ford Breeze), also certificate of waiver; Globe Hotel, Kumara, to Richard F. Furness, also certificate of waiver; Paroa Hotel, to E. Berger. MAGISTRATE’S COURT AT HOKITIKA The following cases were dealt with at the Magistrate’s Court, Hokitika, by the Magistrate, Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.:— John David Stuart was fined £ls with costs, and had his licence suspended, on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car. He was also declared incapable of holding a licence until May 31, 1940. Mr M. B. James appeared for Stuart and Sergeant Gilligan represented the police. Michael Desmond Ryan, Christchurch, was charged with driving at more than 30 miles an hour in Stafford street, Hokitika, on December 22, 1937. Mr A. R. Elcock appeared for defendant and pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate dismissed the case. Five offenders were each fined 5s with costs on charges of being found on licensed premises after hours. Herbert Toohey, Cyril Coyle, and Archibald Stewart were each fined 10s with costs for cycling at night without lights. Herbert Vroblfski was convicted and ordered to pay costs on a charge of allowing cows to wander. Harry John Dunn was charged with allowing a goat to wander on the highway. The Magistrate dismissed the charge as he considered that ownership of the goat had not been proved. A case adjourned from the previous session, in which B. J. K. Griffen claimed from Alexander B. Spiers £274 8s lOd damages was concluded. The plaintiff was awarded £99 8s lOd damages. Court costs £2 19s, and witnesses’ expenses £l2 17s lid, were allowed against defendant. Mr M. B. James appeared for plaintiff and Mr E. W, Russell for the defendant. The claim was a sequel to an accident at Kumara on May 19, 1937, when plaintiff was struck and injured by a motorbus owned and driven by the defendant. FAREWELL DANCE AT RUNANGA TENNIS CLUB FUNCTION A farewell dance and presentation was tendered to Miss Richmond in the Miners’ Hall, Runanga, recently, by members of the Runanga Tennis Club. There was a good attendance, including representatives of the Cobden Tennis Club. The patron, Mr G, Miller, making the presentation of a clock and chromium coffee table to Miss Richmond, expressed regret at her departure and stated she had proved a most popular member both on and off the courts. The best wishes of the club would follow her. The president of the club, Mr R. McTaggart, jun., also spoke, and Miss Richmond replied. A dance was held later. HOKITIKA RED CROSS SUB-CENTRE Mr H. E. R. Sweney presided at the monthly meeting of the Hokitika SubCentre of the Red Cross Society. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr G. Kennedy in his recent bereavement. Dr. Corban reported on the progress of the first-aid class. It was decided to recommend to headquarters that Dr. Childs be appointed to conduct examinations, Sister Gillespie reported that the home nursing class was ready for. its examination. The appointment of Matron Neads as examiner was recommended. BOXING ASSOCIATION AT REEFTON The annual meeting of the Reefton Boxing and Wrestling Association was held, with Mr J. Crossman presiding.
