ANNUAL FETE AT “OAKFORD” ST. JAMES’S CHURCH By the courtesy of Mr J. H. Rhodes, the annual garden party of the parishioners of St. Janies s Chuich, Riccarton. was held on Saturday afternoon in the beautiful grounds of his home, “Oakford,” Riccarton road. “For many years the parishioners have been privileged to use these grounds for the garden party,” said the Rev. S. J. Cooper, when declaring the party open. “It is the wish fo Mr Rhodes that we should continue as formerly, and to him the church officers are deeply grateful.” . , . . Mr Cooper said he also wished to thank the band of the Salvation Army City Corps .or generously providing music during the afternoon, Mr Bucket! and his pupils, who gave a gymnastic display, and all who had helped—by preparing, selling or buying. . The garden, refreshed by recent ram, looked particularly beautiful, and the large lawn, with its gay flower borders, made an ideal setting for the party. Afternoon tea was served under the shade of a huge walnut tree, and wellstocked stalls were arranged round the lawn. Those in charge of the stalls were:— Fancy work: Mrs M. Bailey, Mrs H. E. McDonagh, Mrs S. J. Cooper. Produce; Mrs W. Stone and Mrs M. Ashby. Cakes: Mrs H. Powell and Mrs L. Hamilton. Side-shows; Mr H. E. McDonagh and helpers. Sweets: Members of the choir. WOMEN’S MUSEUM IN NEW YORK MISS EARHART’S DOCUMENTS PRESENTED The World Centre of Women’s Archives, a novel museum housed in a New York hotel, has been formally presented with its first exhibit, the records, charts, and maps used by Amelia Earhart on her last flight. Dr Edward C. Elliott, president of the Purdue University, presented Miss Earhart’s documents, sent to America at various stages of her last flight, at a dinner attended by many prominent women including Miss Jacqueline Cochran, the aviatrix, and Miss Fannie Hurst, the authoress. Manuscripts of Miss Earhart’s writings recently published under the title “Last Flight, were part of the collection. It is also intended to exhibit at the museum historical documents arid objects concerning women’s contributions to culture and history. . The founder of the centre is, Mrs Beard, wife of Charles Beard, the historian and the sponsors include Mrs Franklin Roosevelt. Miss Frances Perkins, secretary of Labour, and Mrs Vincent Astor. They are of the opinion that history to-day tells only half the story—“man’s record” —and that with the “recent political resubmergence of women” and “reactionary trend in many European countries,” there is a danger that much of this valuable material regarding women would soon be lost or destroyed. Mrs Beard remarked that if such provision had been made in ancient Greece,* the entire complexion of written history would have been changed. BLENHEIM NEWS An enjoyable garden party was held by the Marlborough Red Cross Society in. the Wairton Hospital grounds. The guests- were entertained by a treasure hunt, which was won by Miss M. Bell, and “pegging the claim” won by Mrs Priest. Following afternoon tea, the president (Mrs E. J. Harvey) presented certificates and medallions to the students who had gained them at the recent examinations. Amongst those present was Sister Stringer, the New Zealand organiser for the Junior Red Cross. Mrs J. H. Hall (Christchurch), who has been the guest of Mrs Vesey Robinson (“Lake Timara”), has returned home. Mrs Neil Bell (Havelock North), who has been visiting Mrs J. H. Wadworth (“Biancott”), has returned home. Mrs Guy Leatham, who has been staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs H. E. Burden, has returned to WelMrs O. Bunny (Masterton), who have been visiting Blenheim, have gone to Franz Josef glacier. Mrs J. Macandrew (Dunedin), who was staying with her mother, Mrs T. S. Davies (Ngaio Downs) for the Davies—Trolove wedding, has returned home, ~ „ , . Other visitors to Marlborough for the Davies —Trolove wedding were Mrs W K. Tomlinson, Mrs Henderson and Mrs Hobson (Nelson), Mrs R. Lowry (Taihape), Mrs K. Moore (Christchurch), Mrs J. P. Firth, and Mrs R. E. Tolhurst (Wellington). Miss D. Rose (Spring Creek) is visiting Wellington. Miss C. Rayner has returned from a holiday ~t Auckland and Wellington. At the fortnightly card party held at the Sunbeam Free Kindergarten, the prize-winners were;— Mrs H. J. Cole (bridge), Mrs E. M. Jones (“500”).
