COLLECTION OF CREAM

CANS LEFT IN THE SUN

COMPLAINTS AT TEMUKA

Criticism of the regulations governing the collection of cream by dairy factories was made at the last meeting of the Temuka branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union,

“I am sure no Court would compel a farmer to leave his can in the sun,” said Mr G. A. Rbivey, “Here we are being asked to help to beautify the roads, and they make us put up unsightly stands outside the gate. We should fight for the right to leave our cans just inside the gate, which would make very little difference to the lorry driver.” Mr W. H. Staniland, who is a director of the Ashburton Dairy Company, said that the companies were not to blame for the regulations, but that in the interests of efficiency and low costs, he would prefer to see the cans placed on the roadside. The driver could not be expected to back into the gateways, especially in winter, when there was a risk of becoming bogged, and should not be asked to lift the heavy cans over the fence. Mr Staniland offered to report at the next meeting whether the companies could agree to collect the cans of certain suppliers from inside the gate.

WOOL NEEDED FOR CLASSES

A request for samples of wool for use in the wool classing section of the Temuka Technical Association was received at the meeting of the Temuka branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union on Friday evening. Mr G. A. Davey, who presided, strongly advocated helping the association, saying that it was most important that the young men should be assisted as much as possible, and if fleeces were available they should be given. 'After some discussion, during which it became apparent that none of the farmers present had fleeces, though offers were made of crutchings and pieces, it was decided to try to collect pieces from farmers in the district.
