RINKS TOURNAMENT RESULTS OF FIRST TWO ROUNDS Twenty-three clubs were represented at the Canterbury Bowling Centre’s champion of champions’ rinks competition when the first two rounds were played on Saturday afternoon. Spreydon Green Edgeware (Efford s.) 23 beat Linwood (Wilson s.j 10; Papanui (Hartley s.) 21 beat Rangiora (Hargreaves s.) 15; Canterbury (Munn s.) 34 beat United (Broughton s.) 11; Opawa (Hey s.) 15 beat Elmwood (Oakey s.) 14. SECOND ROUND Lyttelton 16 beat St. Albans 15; New Brighton 28 beat Belfast 14; Canterbury 17 beat Opawa 15; .Edgeware 19 beat Papanui 18. The portion of the' second round played on the Opawa green left Returned Soldiers’ Association, Sumner, Shirley, and Spreydon still In the competition. .

CANTERBURY CLUB PLAYS COUNTRY TEAM

TOWN RINK’S SUCCESS

The annual match between a Canterbury Bowling Club's rink and a rink from the country clubs was played on Saturday on the Canterbury green and resulted in a win for the Canterbury Club by 232 points to 213. All the country clubs invited except the Oxford and Methven Clubs were represented. The green was in good order and the play of a number of the country representatives was first class. Results were (Canterbury skips’ names mentioned first): — Raphael 21 beat McEachen (Ashburton) 18; Gordon 11 lost to Chambers (Alienton) 35; McCormack 20 beat Candy (Rakaia) 15; Shaw 21 beat Gwatkin (Leeston) 19; McNish 26 beat Vaughan (Springfield) 16; Russell 23 beat Cullen (Darfield) 22; Turpin 20 drew with Chatterton (Dunsandel) 20; Taylor 24 beat Griffin (Southbridge) 12; Haworth 21 lost to Townshend (Sheffield) 22; Angus 2(T beat Pettersen (Akaroa) 15; McLean 19 drew with Rhodes (Amberley) 19. KAIAPOI V. LINWOOD A four-rink friendly match between the Linwood and Kaiapoi Bowling Clubs was played at Kaiapoi on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a win for Linwood by three games to one. The games resulted (Linwood names first): — Dickson 25, Butcher 13; Muirson 17. Tourell 18; Kearney 20. Williams 18; Bridget 28, Wylie 14. MIDGET CAR RACING ♦ —*— MEETING AT MONICA PARK The second meeting of a short season of midget-car racing, held on Saturday evening at the Monica Park speedway, provided good contests, clever driving, and amusing novelties for the large and enthusiastic crowd. > The manoeuvring of the bunched cars when rounding the bend was a feature of the evening. v Again no accidents .marred the enjoyment of the meeting. Some very good times were recorded, particularly in the time trials, when Paul Swedberg (United States) finished a lap in 22sec, and Vince Podurgiel (United States) was only l-ssec slower.

The evening was full of thrills, and the atmosphere created by the glaring arclights, the brightly-coloured cars, the-roar of motors and exhausts, and the efforts of the drivers to maintain control of their speeding machines on the bends gave Christchurch speedway-goers excellent entertainment. Brough Superior, 24 2-ssec; Swede Lindskog (U.S.A.), four-cylinder Cragar special. 23 2-ssec; Jerry Mathieson (N.Z.), 60 h.p. four-cylinder, 1000 c.c. Elto outboard, 23 3-ssec; Paul Swedberg (U.S.A.), 60 h.p. Elto four-cylinder. 22sec: Beale Simmond (U.S.A.), four-cylinder Hercules special. 24sec; Duane Carter (U.S.A.), fourcylinder Star Continental special. 22 2-ssec Consolidated Press of New Zealand Handicap, four laps, standing start—First heat: Vince Podurgiel 1, Paul Swedberg 2. Time. Imin 39 2-ssec. Second heat: George Beavis (Aust.) 1, Arch Tuckett (Aust.) 2. Time, Imin 40sec. Final; Paul Swedberg (80yds 'bhd) 1. Vince Podurgiel (limit) 2. Time, Imin 41sec. Beavis took the lead, closely followed by Podurgiel and Swedberg. In a great finish Swedberg came on the inside to win narrowly. Pursuit Race—Vince Podurgiel 1, Beale Simmons 2. No time was taken. Competitors when overtaken had to withdraw from the race. Podurgiel gave a good exhibition of driving. Consolation Race, four lap handicap, standing start: for competitors failing to qualify for the Press Handicap—Swede Lindskog (60yds bhd) 1, Duane Carter (100 yds bhd) 2. Time, Imin 40 4-ssec. Mathieson was leading until he spun and left the track. U.S.A. Scratch Race, for four fastest drivers in time trial; six laps, rolling start— Duane Carter 1, Swede Lindskog 2. Time, 2min 20 3-ssec. Carter took command in the second lap and won convincingly. Swedberg was obliged to pull out of the race with engine trouble. . International Match Race, four laps, rolling start—Jerry Mathieson (N.Z.) 1, Vince

Podurgiel (U.S.A.) 2. Time. Imin 35seo. Mathieson took the lead early from Beavis, and was in front all the way. Podurgiel challenged and passed Beavis to gain second place. Special Challenge Race—Swede Lindskog 1, Vince Podurgiel 2. Podurgiel got a bad start, but beat Mathieson for second place. Feature Race, eight cars, 12 laps handicap—Duane Carter (100 yds bhd) 1. Vinos Podurgiel (60yds bhd) 2, Swede Lindskog (40yds bhd) 3. Time. 4min 51 1-Ssee. Tuckett established a lead early, but he went into a spin and had to retire. Carter, Podurgiel, and Lindskog were seen In a great race, and at one stage Podurgiel held a good lead, but Carter, with a wonderful finish, went to first place in the last few seconds. Swedberg was unable to compete.
