METHVEN CLUB’S CARNIVAL

The Methven Amateur Swimming Club held its annual open carnival on Saturday The weather was ideal. The attendance was large and the entries, which included a large number from Christchurch and Ashburton, were a record. At the conclusion of the programme the visiting swimmers were the guests of the club at a picture evening and dance. GALA CUP TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY AT ASHBURTON RECORD ENTRIES IN SENIOR GRADE A good standard of play was reached In many of the matches for the Ashburton Gala Cup tennis championships, which wete begun on the Ashburton anti Te Marae Tennis Clubs’ courts under the auspices of the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association on Saturday. WELCOME TO MINISTER AT MAYFIELD An enthusiastic gathering was neld in the Mayfield Presbyterian Church on Thursday evening to welcome the Rev J S. Freeman back to Mayfield with his wife. Representatives were present from.Carew, Montalto, Anama, and Ruapuna. The Rev. D D. McLachlan presided and also extended a welcome to the formei; Moderator, the Rev. H. H Barton, who was present. Solos and duets were sung by Miss K. Johnston and Mr J. Johnston, McDowell( session clerk, spoke on behalf of the church wishing Mr and Mrs Freeman a happy married life, and asked them to' accept a silver tea service on behalf of the Presbyterian parish. Mrs Edmond extended a welcome to Mrs Freeman on behalf of the Presbyterian Women s Missionary Union. The Rev. H. H. Barton, the Rev. D. D. McLachlan, and Mr D. R. Howden also spoke. Supper was served round by the ladies.

REUNION OF NURSES

STAFF OF ASHBURTON HOSPITAL PROGRAMME ARRANGED Many nurses who have trained at the Ashburton Public Hospital as well as some who were on the staff before it was a training centre, will renew their acquaintance with the institution on Thursday, when a reunion will be held at the hospital. It is expected that more than 100 former nurses from many parts of New Zealand will attend the reunion, for which comprehensive arrangements have been made by a committee, of which Mrs G. M. Breeze and Sister D. Compton are joint secretaries. Among those to attend will be Miss A Lockwood (Ashburton), who was on the staff of the hospital 38 years ago before it was a training school, Mrs W. Raine (Marton), formerly Nurse Roberts, and Mrs Taylor (Spreydon), formerly Nurse Wilkie, both of whom were the first trainees from Ashburton to pass the State examination, Miss E. Loy (Tinwald), who was the first trained nurse from the hospital to be appointed a sister on the staff, and Mrs M. E. Trevor (Tinwald), wife of the first doctor who attended the hospital.

The annual meeting of the Methven branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s rooms recently. Mrs S. G. Holmes presided. The president stated that in conformity with the wish expressed at the Dominion Conference, the annual meeting was advanced one month. _ , The election of officers resulted as follows; —President. INSTITUTES’ FLOWER SHOW A flower show held under the auspices of the Hinds group of Women’s Institutes took place recently in the Hinds Hall. In spite of the unfavourable season there was a .good exhibit of flowers. There were also splendid entries in the cookery and handwork sections. The judges were Mr and Mrs Clark, Tinwald, flowers, Mrs Andrews handwork, and Mrs Corbett, Greenstreet, cookery. Mrs Huston. Tinwald. opened the show and later presented the points prizes. THE BICENTENARY OF METHODISM The conversion of John Wesley and the founding of Methodism were referred to in an address given by the Rev. C. Irving Benson, of Melbourne,

at a special service held in the Baring Square Methodist Church, Ashburton, on Friday evening, to mark the bicentenary of Methodism. Mr Benson, who is holding special services throughout the Dominion, was welcomed by Mr F. Frampton (chairman of the County Council), Mr E. H. Orr (Deputy-Mayor), and by the Rev. Angus Mcßean (chairman of the South Canterbury District, and president of the Methodist Conference of New Zealand). HARVEST FESTIVAL AT BAPTIST CHURCH Harvest festival services were held at the Ashburton Baptist Church yesterday. The preacher for the day was the Rev. G. N. Garlick, of Greendale. The church was specially decorated with produce, fruit, and flowers, and appropriate anthems were sung by the choir. This evening a concert and sale of produce will be held in the Sunday School Hall. The proceeds of the sale and the collections yesterday will be devoted to the local church fund, the Baptist Union’s jubilee fund, and to the funds of the primary department of the Sunday School.
