ASHBURTON COMPETITIONS FAIRFIELD LEADS IN- SENIOR GRADE Fairfield is still leading, with six championship points ahead of Ashburton, in the senior grade of the Ashburton Cricket Association’s competitions. There was no outstanding batting in Saturday’s matches but many good bowling averages were recorded. The top score of the day went to N. Jones (Technical), who made 68 in the senior match against Kai Ora. The batting in the junior grade was weak, W. Ashworth (Lauriston). making the highest total of 31. against Kia Ora. The best bowler in the senior matches was G. Willis (Fairfield), who took seven wickets for 12 runs and six for 14, while in the junior grade R. McCormick (Technical) took five for 14 and J. Taylor (Old Boys) took four for 11. Senior Grade A win by 77 runs on the first Innings was recorded by Technical against Kia Ora. who went in first and made 127, and in the second strike made 78 for the loss of no wickets. Technical made 204 and declared after five wickets had fallen. Bowling for Kia Ora. L. Moore took one wicket for 18. while for Technical D. Duncan took five for 21 and S. Weeks three for 22. PUBLIC WORKS Ashburton beat Public Works Irrigation by 102 runs on the first innings, and gained a three-point win. Batting first. Public Works made 47 runs. JUNIOR GRADE Lauriston v. Kia Ora Lauriston gained a four-imint_win from the Kia Ora junior team.KiaOra batted first and made 88 runs (Smith M). The second Innings’ total was 55, making 16. Lauriston s first mnings total was 120 (W. Ashworth 31. S. Goodwin 20), and their second total was 43 for the loss of one wicket (Ashworth not out 29). Bowling for Lauriston, H. Adams took three wickets for 37 runs and four for 34; Smith, five for 21: Goodwin, two lor 21 and four for 13. For Kia Ora, Burton took five for 31, and White two for 21. Old Boys v. Technical In its match against Technical, Old Boys obtained a four-point win. TOe first lnnings of Old Boys produced 90 (G. Bowden 22. A. Porter 19, D. Zouch 11. and A. Kelly 11), to which Technical replied with 45 (K. Kenny 15 and L. Hawke 12). Old Boys were all out for 79 in their second innings (Kelly not out 44 and Zouch 12). Technical, with only nine players, made 26. the highest scorer being R. Sheehan with 11. The best bowlers for Technical were M. Wall, who took four wickets for 23, R. McCormack, three for 21 and five for 14. while for Old Boys, R. Maynard took four for 19, Porter four for 14, and J. Taylor four Mr 11. Public Works beat Coldstream by default
