FAIR RENTS ACT

DISAPPROVAL BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (FBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, March 1. Disapproval of many of the implications of the Fair Rents Act was emphasised by Mr R. H. Nimmo, at to-night’s meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. With the shortage of houses, the Government’s desire to protect tenants by reasonable means was laudable, he said, but it was decidedly unfair that tenants should have all the privileges of ownership without the responsibilities. which was what the present position amounted to. Such a state of affairs was inimical to the interests of the community as a whole. He knew of a certain block of houses where modern premises would be erected, but the owner could not proceed till he had found houses for each of his tenants. The position was absolutely farcical, and he could not believe the Labour Government ever contemplated a result so far-reaching and so inimical to the progress of the city. The chamber decided to express its disapproval of the legislation and to leave the matter in the hands of the Federated Chambers of Commerce.
