GOOD WEATHER FOR FORESTS

REPORT TO PLANTATION BOARD

The present weather is very favourable to all tree-life, and has enabled fair headway to be made in the Selwyn Plantation Board’s plantations, according to a report made to the board by the superintendent, Mr R. G. Robinson, yesterday. Unusually strong growth is noticeable in pine plantations, and the Oregons have grown this season without' interference from winds. Cutting of firewood was proceeding apace, Mr Robjnson said. There were 11 cutters employed at Bankside and Hororata, but at the present rate of firewood removal this number would require to be increased if a winter supply of fuel was to be built up. A few thousand seedling cupressus macrocarpa wore received from Mr R. Nairn, chairman of the finance committee, and these, with seedlings raised at Darfleld, were pricked off into trays. The report was adopted, and Mr Robinson was given authority to employ more men at wood-cutting. The superintendent presented a report on the exploitation of pine plantations for the next 20 years.
