OBITUARY

MR J. T. BLAKEMORE

Mr J. T. Blakemore, who died at Riccarton recently, was born at Newent, Gloucester, England, and was an early settler in New Zealand. He landed in Hawke’s Bay by the s.s. Helen Denny on May 14, 1874. After spending a short time at waipukurau, Mr Blakemore moved to tne Weedons district, where he married in 1877 Miss Mary Ann Parish, a daughter of Mr Thomas Parish, a Crimean War veteran. About 1881 Mr Blakemore moved to the Springston district, and after farming several properties there, bought the well-known Bawclifte” property, which he successfully farmed for 17 years . A prominent wheatgrower, Mr Blakemore exhibited at the New Zea land International Exhibition at Christchurch in 1906-07, and awarded a silver' medal. He was also a breeder of Clydesdales,. and was exhibitor at various agricultural ana pastoral shows with success. After the Great War, Mr Blakemore retired from farming, and leased ms farm to his son, Mr J. F, Blakemore. As chairman of the Springston School Committee, and the Springston Puhha Hall, and also as a member of tne Patriotic Committee and Farmers Union, he took a prominent part in the activities of the district, including the Soldiers’ Memorial Fund. Mr and Mrs Blakemore celebrated their diamond wedding jubilee on August 9 last year. Mr Blakemore leaves a widow and a family of seven sons and four daughters—Messrs W. H. MR lAN MACLAINE

The death occurred at Bombay last Wednesday of Mr lan Maclaine, after a short illness. He was an electrical engineer, and had received his training at Canterbury University College. The only son of Mr and Mrs A. J. Maclaine, of Blenheim, Mr Maclaine received his education at the Blenheim Convent, Marlborough College, and Christ’s College, and gained his degree in electrical engineering at Canterbury College, While at the university, he was one of 10 selected for a special course with the New Zealand Air Force, He went to England in 1933 to take a position with Metropolitan Vickers, Ltd., and continued his studies at Manchester University Mr Maclaine then joined the staff of ASEA Electric, Ltd., one of the world’s lead* ing engineering firms, which sent mm first to Sweden and then to India, where he resided until his death. Only last year he was lent by his company to the Government of the United Provinces of India, being placed in charge, under Sir William Stampe. of the completion of a chain of five hydro-electric stations along the Ganges canal. While abroad, Mr Maclaine had continued to take an active interest in aviation, and particularly during his stay in England he did a considerable amount of flying.
