TRAMWAY LAWS REVISED
DRAFT SUBMITTED TO AUTHORITIES MANY CHANGES IN THE » REGULATIONS Many changes in the regulations for the loading, manning, and control of tram-cars have been drafted by the Public Works Department to bring the services throughout the Dominion into line with modern transport, the Minister (the Hon. R. Semple) said in an interview on Saturday with "The Press." Copies of the new regulations as drafted had been sent to the tramway authorities and the unions, which were parties to the conference in Wellington more than six months ago, said Mr Semple. Neither party had had time yet to consider the regulations, but he did not anticipate any serious conflict on the new rules.
"The regulations are not the last word, of course, but they represent an honest effort to bring them near the standard," said Mr Semple. "None of the proposals is. in .my opinion, exorbitant. The old regulations were written when the traffic problem was not the one it is to-day. By the application of modern methods and the use of common sense, we have aimed at bringing the laws governing tram-cars and other means of transport up to standard."
