LABOUR AND COMMUNISM

TO TUB RBITOa 0» THE PHK3S. Sir, —Your correspondent inquiring as to whether there are any Communists in the Labour Party gives the impression that Communists oppose religious liberty. In the interest of truth I should like to state the correct position. Communists always insist on absolute equality and freedom for all religions, and this, of course, includes similar freedom for anti-re-ligious bodies. Communists say that as long as capitalism is here* religion cannot be abolished, but that once capitalism is overthrown, religion will gradually decay without any coercion of any kind. Hence Communists respect religious sentiments, although they do hot share them, as they realise that they are the result of certain historical circumstances. At the same time they hold out the hand of co-op-eration to people of all religious views for the mutual benefit of all—Yours, etc S. H. BECK. Rangiora, February 25, 1938.
