GOLF

KAIAPOI CLUB

The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Golf Club was held at the Golf Club pavilion last evening. The president (Mr H. H. Blackwell) presided. The annual report said that the membership of the club was 169. During the year the committee had pursued a progressive policy in improving the playing and club house facilities provided for members. This had entailed extra expentliture, a large portion of which would necessarily be recurring. The members would of course realise that the upkeep and maintenance of a modern golf course could not be undertaken and extra facilities provided unless club members were prepared to meet the cost. The committee had kept a close watch on finances, and had reviewed the position at regular intervals throughout the year, and considered that i£ the present policy was continued and a careful watch kept on the finances the club should have no difficulty in meeting its obligations. The green superintendent (Mr L. G. Billcliff), with the assistance of the greenkeeper and his staff, had carried out a year of steady progress. The fairways in particular were much improved by broadcast manuring, and it was suggested that if the work was repeated in the coming season a further marked difference would be evident. Two open tournaments had been held during the year, both of which were most successful. Club matches were keenly contested, and several interclub games were played. A successful ball had been organised by the women's committee, and the pavilion improvement fund was considerably augmented. The thanks of the club were due to the women's committee for building up the fund, and during the year the sum of £69 3s 6d had been spent on furnishings.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £6 IDs lid after provision had been made for depreciation, and the water supply account by £26 6s. The improvements to the club house had cost £302 15s 6d. which was made possible by increasing the club's mortgage indebtedness by £275.

The president, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, congratulated the club on its progress, and thanked the members of the committee for their co-operation. The following officers were elected:— President. Mr A. W. Leithead; vice-presi-dents, Messrs E. J. Corcoran and E. Gray; club captain. Mr L. B. Evans; secretary, Mr R. J. Smith; committee, Messrs H. H. Blackwell. L. G. Billcliff, and R. G. Rainey; handicapper, Mr A. N. Mackay; selector, Mr L. B. Evans; greens superintendent, Mr L. G. Billcliff. It was decided to recommend to the committee that application be made to the New Zealand Golf Council for the adjustment of the standard scratch score of the course to 70. Opening day was fixed lor March 5.
