NAVY AND VICTORIA
LEAGUES
The presentation of the prizes for the annual essay competition conducted by the Navy League and Victoria League was held last evening at the Navy League Hall. Only the pupils of secondary and primary schools in the Canterbury and Westland districts are eligible for this competition. Commander A. D. Boyle, president of the Navy League, introduced Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp, president of the Victoria League, who spoke of the difficulties which the British Navy had had to face in the different parts of the world. The British Navy, she said, should never be allowed to slip behind as it had done after the Great War. It was with the navy that Great Britain could maintain peace. Lieuten-ant-Commander R. C. E. Harding gave an interesting address on the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps. The J. J. Dougall Challenge Cup, which was held last year by the Timaru Girls' High School, was won this year by St. Andrew's College, who will hold it for 12 months. Eighty-six entries were received from secondary schools and 738 from primary schools. Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp, assisted by Mayor Furby (secretary of the Navy League) presented the prizes. Supper was provided by the women's auxiliary of the Navy League.
