FIGHTING IN SPAIN

ADDRESS AT HOKITIKA FATHER CROWE’S BROADCAST Experiences in the fighting line in Spain and stories of the sufferings of civilians were related by Mr Thomas Spiller, a member of the International Brigade, in an address in aid of the funds of the New Zealand Spanish Medical Aid Committee at the Hokitika Town Hall. Mr M. H. Houston presided. , Several questions were answered by the speaker. References to Communism by one questioner resulted in several interjections, which led to Mr Doyle (president of the West Coast Timber Workers’ Federation) making a statement about the recent steps taken by Mr Turley and himself after the Rev. Father Crowe’s broadcast sermon. Mr Doyle said that the workers’ organisations of New Zealand were entirely in sympathy with the Spanish loyalists. In conclusion, Mr Spiller thanked the audience for its very generous response to the appeal, a sum of about £5 having been collected.
