DISCHARGE INTO GREY RIVER

COMPLAINTS MADE BY RESIDENTS SUGGESTION MADE FOR REMEDY Dissatisfaction with the condition of the Grey river at a point immediately at the foot of Tainui street and along Mawhera quay in a westerly direction, in the heart of the town, has been expressed by a number of Greymouth residents and visitors to the town. At the foot of Tainui street at least one sewer discharges directly into the river, the sanitation from the business area, and the opinion has been expressed that the consequences are very unpleasant. Asked by “The Press’’ whether the state of affairs mentioned constituted a menace to the health of the community. the inspector of health at Greymouth (Mr T. E. Schou) said it did not. He thought the volume of water flowing down the Grey river at a fairly high speed precluded the possibility of any objectionable accumulation and allowed of no nuisance being created.

When the borough engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid) was interviewed about the matter, he said he had very little to say. “The discharge into the ziver at that point,” he added, “has been there for years.Another aspect of the matter which is under discussion is that in the season a large quantity of whitebait is taken from the river at the spot complained of. . . Inquiries confirmed that the opinion was held that it was time something was done to divert the output of the sewer from that point to a point further towards the mouth of the river. It has been suggested that, for the expenditure of a few pounds, pipes could be connected to the present cutlet and carried underwater for about a quarter of a mile in a westerly direction before the discharge was allowed to enter the river.
