FACTORY GARDENS JUDGED

RESULTS OF COMPETITION ANNOUNCED The judging of the many entries for the Christchurch factory gardens’ competition was undertaken yesterday by Messrs H. L. Barton, secretary of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, J. A. McPherson, curator at the Botanic Gardens, and Maxwell, manufacturers’ representative. The gardens of Messrs T. J. Edmonds, Ltd., Ferry road, and Messrs Fleming and Company. Riccarton, were placed first equal, with 94 points out o' a possible 110. The Sanitarium Health Food Company, 90 points, was third. In the B class, the garden of the Zealandia Mills, Hazeldean road, was the winner, with a total of 87 points, and was followed by Stacey and Hawker, Ltd., Linwood, 80 points, and the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., Islington. 65 points. “The winning gardens in the A class competition were of distinctly different types,” said Mr McPherson, “but the marks set out on our schedule amounted to 94 in each case. For design and lay-out 30 marks were possible, for cultivation and maintenance, and flowers. 20. trees and shrubs 15, lawns 15. and any other special feature 10. Particularly meritorious is the effort of the Sanitarium Health Food Company, which had risen from the B class to.obtain third place in the A class competition. The three first gardens are absolutely outstanding, the cultivation and maintenance being exceptional. These gardens are well worth a visit from every citizen of Chx-istchurch. Though on a small area, the winning garden in the B class was remarkable for its maintenance, and a feature of its colour display was made by a large selection of dahlias The gardens placed in both classes showed very close attention to lawn maintenance.
