GAMING CHARGES

Wilson, secretary of the Kawatiri Rowing Club, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, Westport, under the Gaming Act, with assisting in the conduct of a lottery and establishing a lottery by selling tickets in a competition on the Auckland Cup and Grandstand Handicap at the Auckland Racing Club’s Christmas meeting. Evidence was given by Constable George that a boy sold him a ticket in the competition. Sergeant C. J. King, for the police, said the club decided to augment its poor finances b'?’ running the competition. Wilson received no remuneration. , , .. Dismissing the charges under the Justices of the Peace Act, 1927, the Magistrate (Mr R. Ferner) ordered Wilson to pay £5 to some charitable institution.
