AMERICAN NAVAL MANOEUVRES

♦ SEARCH FOR 'JAPANESE SHU'S DENIED WASHINGTON, February 2. Mr Byron Scott, a Californian member of the Naval Affairs Committee, told the United Press that he had received unverified information that the naval patrols off the Californian coast were connected with an attempt to locate the whereabouts of two Japanese battleships, of which the United States Fleet had lost track. Vice-Admiral Leahy, interviewed by the United Press, said that the manoeuvres were not connected with the movements of any Japanese warships, but they were routine movements, which had been planned long ago. "We do not know the whereabouts of units of the Japanese Fleet, except those on the China coast," he said. "We know where those are because our naval units occasionally make contact with them. We have no way of knowing where other units are."
