Rates were beginning to come in. and it was stated that March 26 would be the date for imposing the 10 per cent, penalty. It was decided that the dog registration fees be the same as last year, namely. 2s 6d and 10s. but if payment was made before March 2(5 it would be 2s and 7s 6d respectively. During the two months 262 miles of road had been graded, it was reported, and considerable renairs had been effected throughout the county. The roads generally were in good condition, this being largely brought about by the continuous grading. The reserves committee reported that the strike of pinus insignis had been very good. and the seedlings would soon be ready for planting out in the nursery. The strike of macrocarpa had not been so good. It also recommended a new layout of the council yard. The water-race committee reported a good supply of water, and it was decided to endeavour to have the survey in the vicinity of the proposed new dam speeded up. A letter was received from the New Zealand Farmers' Union about the spread of hemlock in the county. It was stated that this was receiving the attention of the council. PERSONAL NOTES AKAROA Mrs H. W. Wilkins (Dunedin) has returned from a visit to her daughter, Mrs R. D. Waller (Percy street, Akaroa). „ , Mrs G. W. Thomas and Miss Catherine Thomas (Lyttelton), accompanied by Miss Joan Cantrell, are staying at their house at Akaroa. Miss G. Wilkins (Dunedin), who is on the staff of the Wanganui Girls' College, js staying with her sister, Mrs R. D. Waller (Akaroa), and will leave at the end of the week for the north. During the absence of Archdeacon A. J. Petrie (Akaroa), who is op holiday, the services at the Anglican Church wiR be taken by the Rev. R. de Lambert on Sunday and later by the Rev. W. H. Orbell. Miss Hazel limes, who is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs C. Innes; (William street. Akaroa). will leave? Akaroa at the end of the week to sail* by the Awatea for Sydney. Miss Sstelle Wethey (Christchurch) is staying with her aunt, Mrs A. G. Shuttleworth ("Blythcliffe," Akaroa). KAIKOURA Mrs Gerald Drake and Miss Margaret Drake (Auckland) returned home on Tuesday after spending three weeks' holiday in Kaikoura. Detective J. J. Halcrow returned to Christchurch this week after spending a few days in Kaikoura, Constable H, H. Wells returned to Christchurch on Monday after spending a few days in Kaikoura with his family. HORORATA Mrs Lawson, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs Jenkins ("Glendore," Hororata), returned to Invercargill on Wednesday. Mr apd Mrs AtweJl, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs Jenkins ("Glendore"), returned to church yesterday. Mrs Wilson and her daughter are guests of Mr T. D. Jarman ("Heatherlea," Hororata). Mrs Jenkins left yesterday for Arthur's Pass, where she will spend a holiday. Mr T. B. Jones is a patient at St. George's Hospital, ChristchurchMr E. A. Adams, who underwent an. operation at the Christchurch Hospital, has returned home, and is making satisfactory progress. Mrs R. G. Keith and Misses N. and C, Keith returned from Wanganui this week. I'UAH A V Mrs M. Woodham (Bryndwr), who has been spending a holiday with Mrs Keller (Puaha), has returned home. Mrs Hill and family (Parnassus) are spending a holiday With Mrs Hill's. mother, Mrs N. Watkins (Puaha). Miss I. Reed (Coach road), who has been spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs H. A. Reed, and with friends in Qkain's Bay, will leave for Christchurch tormorrow. Mrs W. Winder (Christchurch) is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. C. Harty (Puaha). RAINFALL AT I'UAHA The rainfall at Puaha for January was 3,50 inches, the maximum daily fall being 1.57 inches on January 23. Rajn fell on six days during the month. The fail for January, 1937. was 3.43 inches. WEATHER AT HORORATA Weather records taken by Mr'Jewell ("Terrace ' Station." Hororata). show that rain fell on seven days in January, the maximum fall being 100 points en January 22. The rainfall for January was 4.45 inches, compared with i 4 inches in January, 1937.
