NORTH CANTERBURY DRAW MORGAN PENNANT MATCHES Following is the draw for Saturday’s matches in the Morgan pennant competition being conducted by the North Canterbury Cricket Sub-As-sociation: — Division A—Woodend A v. Kaiapoi B, at Woodend: Eyreton v. Woodend B, at Eyreton; Kaiapoi A v. Fernside, at Kaiapoi. Division B—Rangiora A v. Rangiora B, at Rangiora; Loburn v. Amberley, at Loburn. WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION STYX BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Styx branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently in the Northcote Hall, with Mrs Jones presiding. An interesting talk on “Cake Making for Shows” was given by Mrs J. Radford. The roll call for the afternoon was, “Should Boys Help in the Home, and Why?” The comuetitions for the afternoon were won as follows: —Slice Christmas cake, Mrs Stoddart 1, Mrs Gibson 2; six scones, Mrs Stoddart 1, Mrs Gibson 2; vegetable posy, Mrs Levi 1; tumbler of flowers, Mrs Donaldson 1; single bloom, Mrs Levi and Mrs Cory (equal) 1. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Maher, Moore, and Ohs. KAIKOURA Members of the Kaikoura branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union were the guests of the provincial council and members at Culverden at an enjoyable afternoon at “The Lakes,” the home of the Kaikoura president (Mrs R. Hugonin). The members of the council spoke about the objects of the division in helping needy cases of families throughout New Zealand. Afternoon tea was served. The beautiful grounds and gardens were much admired, and Mrs Hugonin and the Misses Bullen were thanked for their generous hospitality. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES LOBURN The January meeting of the Loburn Women’s Institute was held in the Coronation Hall, with Mrs J. W. MacLeod presiding. A demonstration on rag mat-making was given by Mrs Hmry, tatting by Miss Waters, and smocking by Mrs Sampson. Competitions resulted: Slice of Christmas cake. Mrs Henry 1, Mrs Greenwood 2, Mrs Smith 3; premier bloom, Mrs Pulley 1, Miss Waters 2, Mrs Henry 3: mixed flowers, Mrs Pulley 1, Mrs Henry 2, Mrs Baynon 3. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mesdames Pulley and Dawson, and Miss Waters. PREBBLETON The monthly meeting of the Prebbleton Women’s Institute was held in the Public Library recently, when one new member was elected. A welcome was extended to visiting members from the North Island. An interesting letter was read from the link institute at Wareham, Dorset, England. Invitations were received to the Burnham Institute’s birthday and to a meeting of the Ladbrooks Institute. The gardening circle members and the sick visitors gave satisfactory reports of their activities since the last meeting. Arrangements were made for the annual picnic to take place on February 26 at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens., and also for the sixth birthday of the institute on April 19. An interesting account of the work done by members of the Kopuarahi Institute was given by Mrs Hudson, who was a visitor to the meeting. The competition judges were Mrs Hudson and Mrs Nicholson, who placed entries as follows; —Bloom, Mrs A. Gallagher I, Mrs E. Walker 2, Mrs J. Easterbrook 3: vase of flowers. Miss Horsfall 1, Miss J. Kolkman 2, Mrs W. Kolkman 3; plate of meringues, Mrs W. Kolkman 1, Mrs G. Millar 2, Mrs H. Widdowson 3- summer nightdress, Mrs Widdowson I, Mrs G. Millar 2, Mrs W. Kolkman 3. Hostesses at afternoon lea were Mesflames F. Page, J. O’Neill, G. Asken, and W. Carpenter. LINCOLN Mrs A. Button presided over th# January meeting of the Lincoln Women’s Institute. The hostesses were Mrs C. Watkins, Mrs J. Stewart, and Miss L. Smith. A demonstration on Italian and shadow quilting was given by Mrs A. Button. The monthly competitions resulted:—Senior: Christmas cake, Mrs Templeton 1, Mrs C. Watkins 2, Mrs G. Peryman 3; bloom, Mrs J. W. Stewart 1, Mrs Templeton 2, Mrs C. Watkins 3; raspberry jam, Mrs C. Smith 1, Miss N. Peryman 2. DANCE AT MEDBURY A dance organised by the Hurunui Turf Club was held in the Medbury Hall recently. Music for dancing was played by Mesdames H. S. Ginders and J. Fletcher, and Messrs Kail Brooker and E. Fahey (Hawarden). Mr James Fletcher was master of ceremonies. .
