CHINA CLIPPER IN TROUBLE

MECHANICAL FAULT DEVELOPS RETURN TO LOS ANGELES FROM 700 MILES OUT AT SEA (Received January 23, 8 p.m.) ALAMEDA (California), Jan. 22. Pan American Airways announced that the China Clipper experienced mechanical trouble when 700 miles at sea, and was returning to California. The clipper left San Francisco at 6.6 p.m. (Eastern standard time) on Friday, and turned back at 2 a.m. The Clipper carried eight passengers and a crew of six. Captain J. H. Tilton sent a radio message that he intended to land at Los Angeles because of a ground fog at Alameda. The engines were functioning perfectly and the Clipper was in no danger. It was later reported from Los Angeles that the China Clipper landed there without incident at 9.35 a.m. (Eastern standard time).
