Blenkinsop, field organ--ime of the Girls' Life Brigade, arrived by the Remuera on a three months visit to New Zealand, during which time she will travel 3000 miles inspecting companies of the brigade in New Zealand. , •■•.„■ The, Dominion conference will open at Auckland next Saturday, and Miss Blenkinsop bears greetings from the Countess of Mayo, president of the brigade, and Lord Marks, of Woolwich, the treasurer. i She said members of the movement had never been so enthusiastic as at present. The' movement began in 1902, and now' had 42,000 members in many countries.
GIFT PARTIES,
In honour of Miss Cora Reid. whose marriage to Mr R. Bruce-Smith (Dunedin) will take place at the beginning of next month, a "kitchen" gift party was held at the home of Mrs J. Whyte (Hilton street, Kaiapoi) on Saturday evening. Mrs Whyte and Miss G. Gordon, who will be the bridesmaid, were joint hostesses. Miss Peggy Barker whose marriage will take place next Saturday, was the guest of honour at a "china" gift afterparty at Warner's Hotel. Her bridesmaids, Misses Thora Burke and Enid Macdonald, were the hostesses, and Miss Barker received many useful g Those present were Mesdames B. Macdonald, F. Burke. C. Holdsworth C. CARNIVAL DANCE
The' championship carnival dance, organised by the social committee of the North Beach Surf Club, and held in the North Beach Hall on Saturday evening, attracted a large number of Vl The music was played by Percy Butler and his orchestra, and Mr L. R. Moore was master of ceremonies. The foUowing representatives of the visiting surf club teams were guests of honoun-Mr J. Ranston (Lyall Bay), J& a A. Durrant (Maranui), Mr C. Mentiplay (Maranui), Mr O. Davis (Oreti) Mr E. W. Grimley (Oreti), Mr B Plymouth). Mr F G Ryan (Taranajri), and Mr J. Heslop (Lyall Bay).
LIP-READING CIRCLE
■■The Spreydon Lip-Reading Circle, Kipling street, will resume.its activities on Wednesday, January 26. There will be classes lor advanced Upreaders, and special classes for beginners. No charge whatever will be made, and all interested in the movement are invited to attend. All those with defective hearing, however slight should avail themselves of this opportunity of replacing in some measure their impaired faculty. This class had a very successful season last vear the opportunities for social activities being especially appreciated.
