AFFIRMATION OF CONFIDENCE
NEW (JOVEKNMENT IN FRANCE FURTHER SOCIAL LEGISLATION PLANNED (Received January 23, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, January 21. The Socialists and Communists having pledged their support, the Chamber of Deputies passed a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister, M. Camille Chautemps, by 501 votes to 1. There were 70 abstentions.
The hostile voter was M. Gaston Bergery, the real founder of the Popular Front.
M. Chautemps read a polW-y speech. He declared, in reference to the Cagoulards plot, that the Government would unmask those guilty and submit them to the penalties of the law. The social advantages which the working-class had just acquired would not be impaired, and further social legislation would be submitted safeguarding the interests of employers and employees, and providing workers with pensions. Budget equilibrium would be maintained and monetary freedom respected.
