POLO

SAVILE CUP MATCHES CHRISTCHURCH CLUB WILL NOT TAKE PART The Christchurch Polo Club will not take part in the Savile Cup matches at Cambridge in March, according to information received by "The Press" on Saturday. The decision not to compete has been made because of the lack of ponies. More than the usual interest has been taken in the Savile Cup matches this year because of the likelihood of the winning team being sent to Syd- | ney to take part in the Australasian Gold Cup matches. Members of the Christchurch Club will visit Fairlie on Februray 12 to play in friendly games with members of the newly-formed Ashburton Club and with members of the Pareora Club. This season is the first in which polo has been played at Fairlie, which is now being used as the Pareora Polo Club's ground.

PRACTICE AT HAGLEY PARK

The Christchurch Polo Club's practice games on its ground at Hagley Park on Saturday afternoon were marred by the heat and rain; but fast play and clean hitting provided the 100-odd spectators with some good entertainment.

The heat was tiring to the ponies, and the surface moisture made the ground slippery; but there.were no mishaps.

The teams for the scratch games were:—

Red—H. D. Livingstone (1), Sir Bruce Stewart <2), G. H. McCredie (3) D. W. J. Gould (4).

Blue—G. H. Grigg (1), R. M. D. Johnson (2). Major G. F. Hutton (alternating with G. Hutton. jun., in successive chukkas) (3), R. B. Johnson (4). Visitors and club members were entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs D W. J. Gould, wife of the club captain.
