THE FUTURE OF IRELAND

MR DE VALERA RETURNS HOME HOPES OF REACHING TRADE AGREEMENT (BRITISH OTTICIAL WIRELESS.) (Received January 21, 8.30 p.m.) RUGBY, January 20. Soon after Mr de Valera and his colleagues left this morning for Dublin, Board of Trade and Eire Government experts began detailed consideration of trade and agricultural problems, which, it is hoped, will result in a trade agreement between Britain and Eire. Negotiations will be continued daily.

Newspapers anticipate that Ministerial deliberations will be resumed early in February.

Mr de Valera and his colleagues received a rousing welcome at Kingstown. Crowds swarmed to the pierhead waving tricolours and shouting, "Good Old Dev. Up the Republic." The Minister" reached their cars with difficulty. Mr de Valera later made the following statement on the London talks: "Each side in the negotiations put forward its views and indicated its general attitude on the chief outstanding matters in dispute. The approach of the two States to some of these questions is from diametrically opposite points, and it will not be easy to find agreement. "However, we shall explore the whole> field during the next few weeks. There will be a detailed examination of trade questions and, when the delegations meet again, they should be in a position to discover quickly whether agreement is or is not possible."
