(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15) ASHHURSTPOHANGINA R.C. GOOD FIELDS RECEIVED ITHR PRESS Special Service.! WELLINGTON". January 21. Good fields are carded for the annual meeting of the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club, at Ashhurst to-morrow, and there is the likelihood of some of the horses being present that raced at Trentham on the first two days. Because of the dry spell, the track, which has been liberally watered, should provide fast going. Betting will be on the single-pool system. The following horses may be supported in their engagements:— Hack Hurdles—Kentucky Song and Aurora's Love.

Pohangina Handicap—Joviality and Great Hope. Komako Hack—Erebus and Copycat.

Ashhurst Cup—Wildflower and Alby Novice Stakes —Peach King and Earlscourt.

Gorge Hack Cup—Race Boy and Ohanga. Siberia Hack—Erebus and Son and Heir.

Raumai Handicap—Alunga and Race Boy.

Following are the acceptances:—

AMYTHAS DEAD

OUTSTANDING CAREER

Amythas, one of the greatest handicappers and weight-for-age performers ever to have raced in the Dominion, was found dead in his paddock a few days ago. He had been enjoying honoured retirement on Mr F. S. Easton s Moturoa station for the last 15 years. Mr Easton was induced by T. Quinlivan to purchase Amythas as a yearling from Mrs A. M. Perry for 400 guineas, and during his racing career, from a two-year-old till his solitary start as a six-year-old, he won 22 races and £13,295 in stakes. This son of Demosthenes was, rather appositely, out of a Gold Reef mare named Gold Treasure.

It was as a three-year-old that Amythas reached his greatest heights. In that season he won 12 of his 16 races, and his earnings amounted, to £7695. He started off with the two open handicaps at Dunedin at Christmas, and followed up with the Invercargill Cup and Wellington Racing Club Handicap, a defeat in the Wellington Cup intervening. The Wellington Racing Club Handicap was the first of an unbroken sequence of eight wins, including the Dunedin Cup under 9-1, the Hazlett Memorial Plate, the Canterbury Jockey Club Challenge Stakes, the New Zealand St. Leger, the Trentham Gold Cup, and the Awapuni Gold Cup. He won the Trentham Gold Cup again as a five-year-old, and his other wins included the Wellington Racing Club Champion Plate (twice) and the Canterbury Cup. One of Amythas's keenest rivals was the imported Arrowsmith, another fine weight-carrier, but a sprinter rather than a stayer. They had three notable meetings, and Amythas won each time. The first was the Awapuni Gold Cup, in which Amythas, ridden by A. J. McFlinn, succeeded by a length from Arrowsmith ridden by H. Gray. The next was the Marlborough Stakes, weight-for-age. one mile, at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Royal meeting, held in honour of the Prince of Wales in 1920, and McFlinn this time settled Gray's mount by three lengths. The third clash was in the Wellington Racing Club Champion Plate (now the Harcourt Stakes), Karo on this occasion separating the two horses.
